Cyberattacks expose deeper vulnerabilities in U.S. water systems

Suspected Iran-linked cyberattacks are exposing widespread vulnerabilities in America's drinking water systems, where more than one hundred forty-four thousand public utilities operate independently. According to Axios, many water utilities—especially smaller ones—lack the staff and resources to mount effective defenses. The problem runs deeper: these systems were designed decades ago for efficiency and reliability, not cybersecurity. Now utilities face competing demands: acute cyber threats layered on top of chronic challenges like aging infrastructure and intensifying extreme weather. Investment in cybersecurity often competes with other local priorities, and many small operations have only a handful of employees, relying on state agencies and industry groups for expertise. The American Water Works Association tells Axios the bottom line: utilities can no longer afford to treat cyberattacks, climate change, and aging infrastructure as separate problems—they're one interconnected challenge.
