Online shadow libraries – and why they’re being implicated in AI copyright lawsuits

A federal judge has ordered Anna's Archive to pay over three hundred forty million dollars in combined copyright damages: three hundred twenty-two million to Spotify and three major record labels, plus nineteen point five million to thirteen publishers, per The Conversation. Anna's Archive is one of the world's largest shadow libraries, holding pirated books, academic papers, and music; last December, the group downloaded roughly eighty-six million audio files and two hundred fifty-six million metadata rows from Spotify, which then spread across torrent sites in three hundred terabytes. The judge ordered internet providers to block access, but the defendants never appeared in court, making enforcement extremely difficult — a fact that underscores a broader battleground as multiple AI companies now face lawsuits alleging they used such libraries to train their language models.
