Per 99% Invisible, two Rhode Island brothers in eighteen twenty-one found a market for their woolen fabric among Southern slave plantations. The cloth became known as 'Negro cloth' — a textile category distinguished only by who wore it. Yet enslaved laborers had actually produced the very fabric they were forced to wear.
