Hypotheticals

Philosopher Frank Ramsey argued that ordinary if-then statements don't work like formal logic suggests. LessWrong explores his theory: when you say 'if I were you, I'd take the bet,' you're not assessing whether the conditional is true or false. Instead, you're judging whether you agree with it by imagining the condition as real. He organized hypotheticals along two dimensions—their timeframe and whether you treat the condition as genuinely undecided or already false. The significance: two people can disagree about a hypothetical without either being wrong about the facts, because they're applying different expectations. It's a framework for understanding how conditional reasoning actually works.
