Castello di Galliera in Bologna, Italy

Per Atlas Obscura, the Castello di Galliera in Bologna was built in the early thirteen-thirties as a papal fortress meant to keep the independent city under Rome's thumb. But the Bolognese had other ideas. They revolted and destroyed the castle five times, first striking just a few years after its construction in thirteen thirty-four, with the final dismantlement coming in fifteen eleven. The ruins still stand today next to Montagnola park — and legend has it the park's elevation comes from all the rubble that accumulated from those repeated destructions and reconstructions.
