Sepolcri dei Glossatori in Bologna, Italy

other

Behind the Basilica of San Francesco in Bologna lies a remarkable 13th-century burial ground — the Sepolcri dei Glossatori, or Tombs of the Glossators. According to Atlas Obscura, these monumental structures house medieval jurists who founded the Bolognese School of Law and pioneered a scholarly technique of annotating Roman law texts with explanatory marginal notes, called 'glosses.' Originally five tombs stood here, but three remain visible today, restored in the late 19th century — a testament to the prestige Bologna and its university, the world's oldest, placed on their masters of law.
