Early snakes explored life underground, on land and at sea

Snakes remain one of evolution's great unsolved mysteries, Phys.org reports. These highly modified lizards—with over four thousand living species today—left such a sparse fossil record that scientists still cannot pinpoint what drove the evolution of their distinctive limbless form.
