Voter beware: how electoral commissions are powerless to stop deliberately misleading party names

An Israeli-Australian pro-Israel YouTuber has registered a political party in Victoria—with a name that directly contradicts what he actually believes. Avraham Yemini founded the "Free Palestine" party hoping to dupe left-wing voters, even though his stated position is that Palestine should remain under Israeli control. When the genuine Palestinian liberation movement tried to register with an essentially identical name, Australia's Electoral Commission blocked them because Yemini had already claimed it. The Conversation reports that Australia's electoral laws lack "truth in politics" protections to stop such manipulation. Party names only need to avoid being obscene, frivolous, vexatious, or too similar to existing parties—not to honestly reflect what the party actually stands for. As Victorians head to the polls in November, voters will have to rely on their own scrutiny.
