In the 1990s, Boston sent Big Dig soil to a burning dump, turning it into a park

science

Times of India reports that in the nineteen nineties, Boston's Big Dig excavation project extracted sixteen million cubic yards of soil, and nearly a quarter of it was sent to Spectacle Island in Boston Harbor. The island was a former city dump where methane gas burned underground. The soil capped the landfill and reshaped the island, supporting a restoration effort that brought back trees, plants, birds, and other wildlife.
