The Chonkerton

DGCE SIG Seminar, 27 Aug 2026

NASA Science is hosting a seminar on August twenty-seventh about galactic winds—massive streams of gas that galaxies expel at high velocities. Professor Todd Thompson from Ohio State University will explore these phenomena, which play a critical role in how galaxies form and evolve, yet remain poorly understood. Scientists still don't know exactly how cool gas gets accelerated to such extreme speeds—whether by radiation pressure, cosmic rays, or some other mechanism. Thompson's talk will examine recent research and outstanding questions about these cosmic winds, from molecular clouds to the vast gas halos surrounding galaxies.
