The Mecca Agreement represents a welcome show of force by Arab governments

Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan signed a joint defence agreement in Mecca on August seventh. Per Middle East Eye, the pact reflects distinct strategic interests for each nation: Pakistan seeks financial support and a counterweight to India; Turkey wants a nuclear deterrent and coordination against Israeli military forces in southern Syria; Saudi Arabia aims to counter Iranian-backed Houthi attacks that have disrupted Red Sea shipping and targeted oil infrastructure. Collectively, the three countries command over five thousand six hundred main battle tanks, more than eleven hundred combat fighter jets, and forces exceeding one million troops. The agreement marks a broader shift in how regional powers assess their security needs and reliance on external partnerships.
