7.4-magnitude earthquake in Colombia leaves at least 24 dead

A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit western Colombia on Monday, killing at least 24 people. The Colombian Geological Service says the quake was centered near San José del Palmar in the Chocó Department, though the worst damage struck the regional capital, Quibdó, where officials report serious harm to buildings. The tremor was felt as far off as Bogotá and Quito, and Chocó's governor says the region is now bracing for aftershocks. According to the Buenos Aires Herald, Colombia's president, sworn in just three days earlier, has taken personal charge of the emergency response and is traveling to the area himself.
