Fermentation emerges as key pathway for ammonium production beneath the Pearl River Delta

science

Researchers at the University of Hong Kong and Shenzhen University have identified microbial fermentation as the likely main pathway for ammonium production in sediments beneath the Pearl River Delta. According to their study, this discovery helps explain why groundwater in the region contains exceptionally high natural ammonium levels. The research indicates that microbial processes deep underground are a major source of the compound.
