Argentine provinces bet on mining boom while battling economic woes
business
Argentina's western and northern provinces are betting on mining to lift their economies. The government has approved twenty-one investments through its Incentive Regime for Large Investments, with twelve focused on mining in five provinces: Mendoza, San Juan, Catamarca, Salta, and Jujuy. According to Buenos Aires Herald, these mining projects are expected to bring more than twenty-one billion dollars in investment and create over sixty-five thousand jobs. But those provinces are currently struggling: economic activity fell four point two percent year-over-year, informal employment exceeds fifty percent in most areas, wages lag the national average, and household debt is rising.
