Colorado district will eliminate Bible-based content in new reading curriculum, officials say

Montezuma-Cortez district officials in southwestern Colorado have announced plans to remove or modify Bible-based content from their new reading curriculum, Chalkbeat reports. The district adopted Bluebonnet, a curriculum developed in Texas, which includes lessons based on the Book of Genesis, the Parable of the Prodigal Son, and other Biblical passages. Superintendent Eddie Ramirez announced on Saturday that the district would ensure its reading instruction aligns with Colorado academic standards and doesn't serve "as a vehicle for religious instruction." The district chose Bluebonnet to implement an improvement model used by Houston schools, which have shown significant gains on state tests. Teachers and principals will review the curriculum to remove or modify religious content ahead of a school board vote scheduled for Tuesday.
