Per Phys.org, researchers studying Toxoplasma gondii have identified an unusual survival strategy the parasite uses within crowded infected cells. Toxoplasma, which infects hundreds of millions of people worldwide, typically causes mild illness, though it can be severe in people with weakened immune systems and in developing fetuses. The parasite is also known for forming long-lived cysts in tissue that allow chronic infection to persist for years.
