Scientists found the sweet spot for dumping iron into the ocean

Ocean iron fertilization might work as a climate strategy, but only in certain locations. Anthropocene Magazine reports on a UC Irvine study published in Nature examining where ocean iron fertilization works best. The research shows the Southern Ocean could deliver substantial carbon removal while actually boosting zooplankton populations, whereas the equatorial Pacific would deplete nutrients and cut fish food by ten percent. The Central Pacific should be avoided entirely due to severe ecological risks. If scaled across large areas over decades, the strategy could remove zero point seven gigatons of carbon dioxide annually—though researchers say the next step is testing real-world fishery impacts.
