Nonrepeating photonic crystal may enable more tunable, reliable semiconductor lasers
tech
Researchers from Kent Choquette's lab have created a new semiconductor laser using a quasi-periodic photonic crystal pattern, moving away from the repeating patterns that have traditionally been used. Per Phys.org, the device—built on a buried dielectric platform—opens a new path toward tunable and reliable photonic-crystal surface-emitting lasers for defense and aerospace applications. Their work appears in Applied Physics Letters.
