Researchers studying how the chess AI Maia-3 works internally have discovered that one of its neural components doesn't simply detect knight forks as previously thought, but instead audits knight moves, grading them by strategic merit. Most distinctive is its harsh suppression of "pointless" knight moves—technically legal but strategically empty ones. Per LessWrong, the head ignores the same tactics when played by other pieces and grades threats along a gradient of piece value: attacks on pawns face the least suppression, attacks on queens the most. Interestingly, this mirrors how experienced chess players think, intuitively dismissing moves without strategic purpose. The finding suggests Maia-3's network has learned to discourage aimlessness much as humans do through years of play.
