Nearly 1 in 4 students are chronically absent from school – kids who feel happy and safe are less likely to miss class
other
Nearly one in four students in the United States now miss at least ten percent of the school year, a level that puts their learning at risk, The Conversation reports. While chronic absenteeism spiked after the pandemic, it has settled at about twenty‑three percent nationally. Researchers analyzing nearly a decade of Georgia survey data found that students who feel safe, connected, and supported at school are significantly less likely to be chronically absent. Conversely, drops in school climate trigger sharp spikes in absenteeism, especially among Black and Latino pupils. The authors suggest schools begin by auditing suspensions, ensuring each student has a trusted adult, and asking learners what would make them want to attend, sending a clear message that they are seen and valued.
