Detroit's school board has a new member: twenty-five-year-old Jeremiah Steen, a philanthropist and youth advocate, was appointed Wednesday to fill the seat left vacant by the death of board member Iris Taylor. Chalkbeat reports Steen will serve through the end of December, with a focus on workforce development as the district rolls out a high school redesign aimed at college and career readiness. He was chosen over Sherisse Butler after scoring highest in a third-party evaluation of resumes and interviews. Steen, a former unsuccessful board candidate in 2024, is not running in the November third election, where five board seats are up for grabs.
