Over 75% of UK wetlands have been destroyed – restoring them would help prevent wildfires

science

The Conversation (UK) reports that firefighters have spent three weeks battling a wildfire in south Wales that spread across more than four thousand hectares. The article notes that over seventy-five percent of the UK's wetlands have been destroyed since seventeen hundred, leaving landscapes drier and more fire-prone. Restoring bogs and marshes, for example by blocking drainage ditches and reintroducing sphagnum moss, can keep the ground wetter and slow fires, the outlet says. As the piece concludes, making Britain more fire-resilient means restoring its natural wet defences.
