3D Printering: Why is my PLA so Brittle?

Hackaday explains that poly(lactic acid, or PLA) has become a staple for desktop 3D printers because it’s derived from renewable lactic acid and can even compost at temperatures above sixty five degrees Celsius. Yet the material is notoriously brittle, especially when its polymer chains are in the more rigid crystalline state. Most consumer spools contain the L‑lactide form, and manufacturers try to soften it by blending in the D‑lactide isomer, creating copolymers, or adding plasticizers such as polyethylene glycol or sunflower oil, as Hackaday reports. These additives can improve flexibility but often migrate out over time, leaving print quality unpredictable. Consequently, the exact recipe of most commercial PLA spools remains a mystery, so users may still find their prints snapping despite all the engineering.
