Spoofed Serial Number Unlocks Cricut Machine

tech

A hobbyist has successfully unlocked a deactivated Cricut Maker cutting machine salvaged from e-waste. As Hackaday tells it, the user discovered the device was sending its serial number to the companion PC software in plain text, without any encryption or checksums. To bypass the lockout, the hacker installed an RP2040 microcontroller between the machine and the computer to spoof a valid serial number. While this hardware fix works, the researcher believes a software-only solution may also be possible.
