‘Friday afternoon fraud’: warning for UK homebuyers on bank scams
world
The Guardian reported on Sunday that victims have lost tens of thousands of pounds, and in one case three hundred thousand pounds, after receiving fake emails that appear to come from solicitors or estate agents. The criminals infiltrate the email exchange between homebuyers and their legal representatives and then ask for payment to a bank account they control, sometimes after hacking a solicitor’s account and often through phishing. The Guardian warns UK homebuyers to stay vigilant against such deceptive messages.
