At zero degrees north, zero degrees east—where the prime meridian meets the equator—there supposedly sits an island. Except it doesn't exist. Null Island is a cartographic hoax that spread so widely it became a genuine map peculiarity. Located six hundred kilometers south of West Africa in the open ocean, nearly five thousand meters deep. According to Boing Boing, with capitalism now having conquered space, this imaginary island may be humanity's last refuge.
