Researchers at MIT and the Whitehead Institute have discovered that cells use small molecules called polyamines to protect themselves from toxic iron overload. As MIT News reports, these polyamines act like storage lockers, keeping iron in a non-reactive state to prevent it from damaging DNA and cell membranes. This finding may lead to more effective cancer treatments by combining polyamine-lowering drugs with other therapies to trigger cancer cell death. The discovery also provides a potential link to early-onset Parkinson's disease, where mutations affect polyamine levels and iron often builds up in the brain.
