EVE Online: The Move to Python 3 Begins!
tech
EVE Online, the long-running space MMO, is beginning its migration to Python three, ending more than two decades on Stackless Python. Simon Willison's Weblog notes this is the studio's first major Python upgrade since twenty ten, requiring the processing of two point four million lines of code through automated conversion and manual review—because Python two and three differ in roughly twenty thousand places, including basic arithmetic; for instance, one divided by two yields zero in Python two but zero point five in Python three. The studio has prior experience with such deep infrastructure work: they replaced Stackless in their newer game EVE Frontier using tools they've now released as open source.
