APOD: 2026 August 27 – Colorful Aurora over an Icelandic Waterfall

NASA Science shares a stunning photograph taken at Iceland’s Skógafoss waterfall, where a vivid aurora lit the night sky. The image, captured in a single five‑second exposure in April twenty twenty‑five, shows green, red and pink curtains of light dancing over the falls. Auroras occur when charged particles from the solar wind are funneled by Earth’s magnetic field into the upper atmosphere, colliding with oxygen and nitrogen gases that emit those colors.
