UK watchdog plans to break Apple and Google’s ‘effective duopoly’ on mobile app stores

tech

Britain's competition authority is challenging Apple and Google's duopoly in mobile app stores. The Competition and Markets Authority wants developers to be able to steer users away from the official stores for payments, bypassing Apple and Google's restrictive payment systems. According to The Guardian World, the watchdog argues that this effective monopoly limits competition and harms both app makers and consumers. Opening the doors to alternative payment methods could increase competition and give developers more control over their business models.
