Does generative AI save time at work?

FRED Blog (St. Louis Fed) reports that more American workers are turning to generative AI at their jobs. The share of employed adults who used such tools in the past week rose from twenty eight point two percent in the third quarter of twenty twenty four to thirty nine point two percent by the second quarter of twenty twenty six. Likewise, the proportion of work hours assisted by AI increased from four point one percent to six point three percent over the same period. Respondents also said the share of work hours saved grew from one point six percent to two point two percent. Generative AI, which can create text, images, or code, is therefore beginning to free up real work time, and could show up in broader productivity statistics if the trend continues.
