Australia’s Nationwide Phone Outage Was An Embarrassing Failure

Hackaday reports that on July eighth, twenty twenty six, Telstra, Australia’s largest telecommunications provider, suffered a nationwide outage that left about eight point eight million people unable to make calls or use mobile data. The failure traced back to three decades‑old network time servers, one of which rebooted and mistakenly reported the year two thousand six because of a known GPS date‑rollover bug. That incorrect time cascaded through authentication systems, causing certificates to be rejected and forcing rail communications and emergency services offline. The problem was isolated by seven eleven a.m., but full restoration didn’t occur until late afternoon. The incident has prompted the industry to issue fresh guidance on emergency‑call handling and highlights how undocumented hardware changes can cripple a modern network.
