LWN.net reports that virtualization lets a large number of virtual CPUs share a smaller pool of physical cores, but heavy workloads on too many vCPUs can cause contention and degrade performance. The steal governor patch series, authored by Shrikanth Hegde, is an attempt to let virtual machines voluntarily reduce the number of vCPUs they use when contention becomes high.
