‘Tonnes of rubble’: 58,000 buildings estimated destroyed in Venezuela earthquakes

world

The Guardian reports that preliminary satellite analysis suggests twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela last week may have caused far more destruction than initially reported. The magnitude seven point two and seven point five quakes, which hit last Wednesday, killed at least one thousand nine hundred forty-three people and injured more than ten thousand five hundred seventy-one. Satellite imagery indicates more than fifty-eight thousand buildings may have been damaged or destroyed. The United Nations migration agency warns that up to six point eight million people could be affected and will need shelter, water, sanitation, healthcare, and emergency relief supplies.
