Trump administration seeks to restrict internships for international students

The Trump administration has issued a federal memo directing universities to restrict certain internship work authorizations for international students, with a warning that non-compliant schools could lose their certification to enroll foreign students. Dawn reports the memo, dated August twenty-fourth, says the Student and Exchange Visitor Programme has observed a rise in Curricular Practical Training authorizations that appear to violate regulations. UCLA and UC Berkeley have already paused some of those applications while reviewing the guidance. UC Berkeley's international office says it's unlikely to process certain work authorization applications in the near future, though it will continue handling degree-requirement training. The Department of Homeland Security says the regulations themselves haven't changed, but schools and employers should consider themselves on notice that abuse of the system will no longer be tolerated. The move extends the administration's broader pressure on universities, which have faced probes and funding threats over issues from pro-Palestinian protests to diversity initiatives.
