ESA awards first European Launcher Challenge contracts

NASASpaceflight reports that the European Space Agency has signed the first contracts under its European Launcher Challenge, committing five hundred forty-three point six million euros to three rocket startups: Germany's Isar Aerospace gets one hundred ninety-seven point eight million, Rocket Factory Augsburg gets one hundred eighty-six point nine million, and Spain's PLD Space gets one hundred fifty-eight point nine million. A fourth contract with MaiaSpace is still being finalized. The program aims to give Europe more competitive access to space by supporting commercial launchers, with funding tied to milestones: companies must reach orbit by the end of twenty twenty-seven to unlock operational launch services through twenty thirty, and demonstrate vehicle upgrades by twenty twenty-eight. Member states committed about nine hundred two million euros, more than double the original proposal, though one finalist, Orbex, entered administration earlier this year; the next milestone is a successful orbital launch before twenty twenty-eight.
