Bannu peace committee agrees to no protests as talks with police conclude

In Bannu, a tense standoff between police and a local vigilance group has been defused. Dawn reports that the Police Peace Committee has submitted an eleven-point written pledge to district police, agreeing to stay out of protests, strikes and political activity, and to make arrests only through lawful channels. The deal follows a boycott sparked by the transfer of seven constables, which had already disrupted policing and traffic in the area. A separate four-day protest in nearby Lakki Marwat also ended after talks secured the recovery of an abducted officer and a review of the disputed transfers. The truce comes as Bannu district has faced a surge in militant attacks in recent months, with regional officials warning that weakening the committee could let that violence resurge.
