Bannu police peace committee submits 11-point assurance as talks conclude

world

In Bannu, the Police Peace Committee and police officials wrapped up talks with an eleven-point written pledge covering the committee's conduct going forward. Dawn reports members agreed to stay out of protests, strikes and political activity, to make no arrests without legal authority, and to work with the army, Frontier Corps and Counter-Terrorism Department only when directed by authorized officers. The committee had formed amid a wave of militant violence in the district, and one lawmaker warned that weakening it now could let attackers regain ground. In nearby Lakki Marwat, a separate four-day protest by the committee ended after a similar deal that included the recovery of an abducted police official.
