The Universe, the Uncanny, and Fashion

In a personal essay for Quantum Frontiers, physicist and author Sola Mahfouz draws a parallel between her childhood passion for fashion in Afghanistan and her later career in theoretical physics. She describes how both fashion and physics begin with a person facing something they don't understand and trying to give it form. Mahfouz uses the metaphor of a tailor to explain the holographic principle, where a three-dimensional world is encoded in two dimensions, and she ends by suggesting that it is the very lack of certainty that drives physicists to keep creating new theories.
