The UK’s New Under-16 Social Media Ban Will Cause More Harm Than It Prevents
tech
The UK government has announced plans to ban social media for users under sixteen, set to take effect in the spring of twenty twenty-seven. The ban would apply to major platforms including TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Snapchat, and X.
But according to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the policy has fundamental flaws. There is no reliable, privacy-preserving way to verify users' ages online, yet the ban requires platforms to implement age checks. Beyond that, young people would lose access to legitimate content: educational videos on YouTube, local events on Facebook, and connections to distant friends and family.
The EFF argues the UK government has repeatedly pursued age-gating solutions without tackling the core problem. You cannot verify age online without compromising privacy. The organization says a social media ban generates headlines but won't solve the real issue and will inevitably restrict access to lawful speech and valuable online communities.
