Researchers at MIT have created a detailed cellular map of the striatum, a brain region essential for movement, decision-making, and reward processing. As MIT News tells it, the team used single-cell RNA sequencing to identify thirty-one distinct subgroups of neurons, including specific populations linked to depression, schizophrenia, and addiction. The study also reveals why certain neurons are more susceptible to Huntington's disease, while others remain resilient. This atlas provides a foundation for scientists to develop more targeted drug treatments for these complex neurological disorders.
