90%+ of VP+ Candidates Can’t Tell Me What They’ve Learned After 10 Interviews. That’s a Disqualifier.

business

According to SaaStr, Jason Lemkin — a board member and long-time investor — has a simple habit when interviewing VP-level candidates: he tries to be one of the last interviewers. By that point, the candidate has usually had eight to ten conversations with the founding team. Then he asks one question: What have you learned from these interviews? Ninety percent or more of candidates can't give a compelling answer. Lemkin considers this a disqualifier. The insight cuts to something fundamental: strong executives should synthesize feedback, adapt their thinking, and demonstrate genuine curiosity — not just accumulate interviews.
