Positioning Without Satellites Or Base Stations
tech
According to Hackaday, researchers are advancing positioning systems that harness FM radio broadcasts instead of satellites. While GPS and GLONASS have dominated location services through orbital networks, FM signals—ubiquitous on the ground—offer a complementary infrastructure for position finding. The approach works by analyzing the timing and strength of radio transmissions already broadcast everywhere, potentially enabling navigation in urban canyons and indoors where satellite signals falter, without dependence on cellular networks or space-based systems.
