Musk’s X poses “serious risk to Americans’ privacy,” advocates warn FTC
tech
According to Ars Technica, privacy advocates are urging the Federal Trade Commission to reject Elon Musk's attempt to end government oversight of X, formerly Twitter. The company has been operating under an FTC consent decree—essentially a regulatory agreement following past privacy violations. Musk's team has sought to terminate that arrangement, but privacy groups warn that doing so would pose serious risks to Americans' data, particularly given X's expanding artificial intelligence capabilities. The advocates argue that without FTC oversight, the platform could misuse user data for training large language models without adequate safeguards. The FTC hasn't yet ruled on the request, but privacy advocates are making a clear case that the monitoring should remain in place.
