A Venezuelan security guard has been pulled alive from the rubble of a collapsed shopping center, eight days after devastating earthquakes struck the country. Forty-three-year-old Hernán Alberto Gil Flores survived beneath the Galerías Playa Grande mall in La Guaira, sheltered by an air pocket in his workstation cabin. International rescue teams brought him out to cheers. According to The Guardian, Gil Flores initially told rescuers not to alert his wife, fearing he might not survive the ordeal.
