An eInk, ESP32-based Game Boy
tech
According to Hackaday, hobbyist Tyler August has created a Game Boy-inspired handheld using an e-ink display and ESP32 microcontroller. The project capitalizes on today's glut of affordable development boards and modular components—reimagining a thirty-year-old gaming device with modern low-power display technology. E-ink's key advantage: excellent sunlight readability and battery efficiency. The result trades the original Game Boy's glowing backlit screen, which killed batteries and visibility outdoors, for a display that actually gets sharper in daylight. It's a clever reminder that vintage hardware concepts aren't obsolete—they just needed to wait for the right technology.
