According to io9, the Energy Department has authorized a major grid manager to require data centers to switch to backup power during extreme heat stress. Data centers consume massive amounts of electricity for cooling and processing, which strains infrastructure during peak temperatures. By using backup generators, data centers can ease pressure on the main grid and help prevent rolling blackouts.
