He downplayed the timing, doubting it was a direct response to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese being in the Pacific to sign a new defence pact with Fiji, but said Canberra remains concerned by China's rapid military buildup and the lack of any strategic reassurance to the region. Marles argued there's no clear explanation for the scale of the capabilities China is developing.
