The company's chief financial officer said Telstra does not yet know what caused the failure, which was national in scope but intermittent. The knock-on effects were wide: Victoria's regional train network ground to a halt after a radio fault tied to the outage, with a long list of cancelled services and passengers told to defer travel. Eftpos payment systems were also hit, and troublingly, some triple-zero emergency calls were affected. Telstra's message, in its own words, was simply: we're so sorry.
