According to game historian Jimmy Maher on Adafruit, SimCity's massive success bankrolled Maxis's subsequent projects—most of which were commercial failures. Interestingly, designer Will Wright admitted SimCity was a caricature of a city, not a real simulation. Yet that simplification became genius: it invented the city-builder genre, legitimized sandbox play, and influenced everything from Civilization to modern strategy games. The lesson: sometimes a beautiful fake outpaces ugly truth.
